چکیده

A mobile station (MS) undergoes handoff when it travels out of the coverage area of its current access point (AP) and tries to associate with another AP. In this paper we propose a method using GPS (Global Positioning System) to minimize the number of APs to be scanned by the MS during each handoff procedure. The entire geographical area is considered as a two dimensional plane divided into hexagonal coverage areas. Average Distance (d) is defined as the distance travelled by the MS in a time interval td (where td is defined as the total time delay in scanning, authentication etc. for a new AP). A new hexagonal area of side ‘b’ is created within the pre-existing hexagonal cell of side ‘a‘ by excluding the area covered by the MS in time td (as defined by ‘d’). A new variable‘s’ is defined which keeps track of the MS within the cell and when s>b handoff occurs. To minimize the number of APs to be scanned, cell sectoring approach is adopted in which every hexagonal cell is divided into 6 equal segments of 60 0 each. This will result in a reduction of number of APs to be scanned and the handoff latency will also be reduced to a great extent.

A QoS-Aware Handoff using RSVP in Next Generation Wireless Networks

The handoff call blocking probability minimization is an important issue for seamless wireless network operation. Handoff delay minimization is in parallel with this task. Mobile stations with QoS requirements should be able to receive the same service level during and after handoff. This constraint amplifies the handoff latency caused forced termination problem. This research introduces a hand...

Minimization of Handoff latency by co-ordinate evaluation method using GPS based map

Handoff has become an essential criterion in mobile communication system, specially in urban areas, owing to the limited coverage area of Access Points (AP). Handover of calls between two BS is encountered frequently and it is essentially required to minimize the delay of the process. Many solutions attempting to improve this process have been proposed but only a few use geo-location systems in...

Minimization of Handoff Latency by Vector Analysis Method

Due to rapid growth in IEEE 802.11 based Wireless Local Area Networks(WLAN), handoff has become a burning issue. A mobile station (MS) requires handoff when it travels out of the coverage area of its current access point (AP) and tries to associate with another AP. But handoff delays provide a serious barrier for such services to be made available to mobile platforms. Throughout the last few ye...

Performance evaluation of the post-registration method, a low latency handoff in MIPv4

In this paper we evaluate a low latency handoff protocol for MIPv4, the Post-Registration handoff method. This mechanism proposed by the IETF tries to improve the performance of Hierarchical Mobile IP by decreasing the handoff latency. We give a detailed description of the protocol behavior by means of an ns simulation and propose a simple queuing model to study the influence of various paramet...
